"I chose AmeriCorps with the Martha O'Bryan Center initially because it provided a great opportunity to work directly with students and to interact with the policies and laws of the education student. My experience in AmeriCorps and the students I had the great honor of serving helped me focus my attention on being the best I can be so that I can continue to serve for the rest of my life. I've since attended and graduated from law school, met plenty of new people, and am constantly working to find ways to stay involved with Martha O'Bryan Center." - Elizabeth Rein, AmeriCorps member -'17-18
"When I graduated from undergrad, I was fairly certain I wanted to get my masters in social work, but a number of older and wiser people in my life recommended I get some experience in the working world first, before diving right back into school. I wanted to work in a social services field, but not having studied social work in undergrad meant that I didn’t meet the qualifications for most social work positions. As I was trying to find something that would align with my passions, give me experience in social work, and that I was qualified to do, I stumbled across the position “High School Success Coach with the Martha O’Bryan Center.” This AmeriCorps position sounded perfect for me - and it was! I completed two full AmeriCorps terms in the same role, and I loved every minute of it. The job gave me experience in my desired field that both confirmed my passion for it and reassured my competence in the field. Before I’d finished my second term, I was confident in my decision to pursue a masters in social work. I applied in the fall of my second term, and was able to share my experiences at the Martha O’Bryan Center in my grad school applications. I was also able to use both AmeriCorps Education Awards to cover almost all of the cost of my program. I am forever grateful for the things I learned and the person I became through AmeriCorps." - Charlotte Payne, -'18-'19
